About Us

Metzy’s began life on wheels. In 2014, we rolled out Newburyport’s first Gourmet Food Truck, with a bright blue, beach vinyl wrap.  We started out from day 1 serving bold, taqueria-style street food to the people of Newburyport. At the time, the city didn’t have a clear path for mobile food businesses, so we had to fight through trial and error, late-night problem-solving, and plenty of persistence just to get off the ground. Those early days weren’t easy—but the community rallied behind us, and Metzy’s quickly grew from “that new taco truck” into a local favorite.

By 2016, it was clear that the truck wasn’t enough to keep up with the demand. We took a leap and transformed the old MBTA train station at 5 Boston Way into Metzy’s Cantina—a lively, full-service restaurant and bar right along the Clipper City Rail Trail. We even built a playful “truck window” inside the Cantina to honor our roots on the street.

Community Roots

Metzy’s has always been about more than food. We’re deeply tied to Newburyport—we’re raising families here, with kids coming through the local schools. We’re proud to be a local employer, offering jobs to neighbors, friends, and students who are part of this community’s fabric. We see the Cantina as a gathering place: a spot for commuters grabbing a bite before the train, families celebrating milestones, bikers and walkers coming off the trail, and friends reconnecting over tacos and margaritas.

Rails End Collective

When we moved into the train station, we wanted to do more than just open a restaurant—we wanted to help re-energize the neighborhood. That vision became the Rails End District: a collective of businesses, makers, and artists who’ve turned the once-quiet industrial park into a destination. Metzy’s is proud to have helped spark that collaboration, and we’re even prouder that our guests often spend their day exploring galleries, breweries, shops, and studios just steps from our doors.
